Why wait?

Given a recent experience with Pizza Hut (over an hour and a half wait for a delivery!), I was interested to see Daniel Hammermesh at Freakonomics ask if companies should pay us for waiting. Some pizza companies do this (deliver in 30 minutes or it’s free), and there are benefits even to firms if they provide them with a competitive advantage:

[…] companies that offer a credit on your account if you have to wait more than some posted time would have a competitive advantage in attracting clients; and the threat of payment would provide lower-level managers an incentive to improve efficiency.

Lots of industries could use this kind of implementation, don’t you think?
